The School of the Longhunter, held at Prickett’s Fort State Park, Fairmont, WV, is a two-day seminar which takes in a variety of subjects relevant to anyone who participates in 18th Century living history or even just has an interest in that time period. This year, the event was held on April 9th and 10th and covered: Frontier forts, First trappers and hunters of the Eastern frontier, Capotes and blanket coats, Birchbark canoes, the 18th Century Indian captivity experience and French Longhunters, among other topics. The presentations were well done and interesting.
As you can see from the pictures there was an encampment around the fort and some sutlers in attendance. There were various activities in the fort, including a flintlock pistol shooting contest and a workshop on using period dyes. There was entertainment in the evenings and a fort feast, as well as a benefit auction, with proceeds to go to the fort. All in all this is an informative and fun event and I recommend it to anyone with an interest in the period.
