Old Bedford Village 2014

This year the annual battle between Grossdeutschland and their invited units and the 193rd Rifle Division,  their comrades the 9th Guards and other gallant Red Army units, took place on the weekend of November 7-9, 2014. This year, the scenario involved the Red Army’s advance into Poland. As has been the case for the last several years, the event was planned  and supervised by Dan McMichael, who as usual, did a bang-up job. There was a sizable civilian population present in the village, who got caught up in the fighting. Also present was a large formation of  partisans led by Danny Oakes Tarell.. These groups added a much broader dimension to the battle scenarios.

Linda served as an assistant medic to senior medical sergeant (now Lieutenant) Mike Momont and I provided an armed guard for the medical staff. I also helped mike hump our two stretchers around the event site. (They do get a little heavy after a while.) We were on the periphery of the action most of the day, but had the advantage of being able to observe many of the troop movements from some distance, due to our positioning. We did get into the thick of things near the end of the day when the Soviet forces occupied a strong position on the edge of the village which resulted in a stalement.

As always, we had a good weekend and got to see some old friends and do a little shopping as there was a fair amount of vendor goods on sale in the Visitor’s Center.

Jim, had a great time. Enjoyed taking the field with you and Linda. Figures…after you and Linda had left on a HQ run, the Fritz would attempt a run at our position. They were gracious hosts and shared provisions with me. I know, I will probably be tried and executed for that now. Oh well!

Yes, we did have a rather good view from our position. The action and ablutions were intense!

Looking forward to 2015 should there be no conflict of scheduling.
