Arthurdale Heritage and the New Deal Festival planning committee would like to invite living history hobbyists and reenactors to dress up in their 1930s “Sunday best” and come out to the New Deal Festival in Arthurdale, WV on July 10, 2010.

We’re looking for any New Deal era impression you might be interested in portraying. Arthurdale was the first New Deal Homestead community in the nation and home to farmers, craftspeople, builders, factory workers, miners and more. As a federal project, there were also federal employees, teachers, and planners. It was also visited often by politicians and reporters because of its connection to the New Deal legislation. Not to be forgotten are the families – mothers, fathers, children, grandparents and grandchildren. This is a unique opportunity for a peacetime impression from a unique period of our history!

We hope that you can come to Arthurdale, July 10 and help us celebrate the New Deal. If you are interested or have questions, please let us know!

I wanted to give everyone a quick preview of some great events coming up in North Central West Virginia over the next few months. First of all, is the 5th Annual WWII Living History Weekend in Rowlesburg, WV on the weekend of June 19, 2010. This is West Virginia’s premier WWII event. Located in the picturesque Cheat River Valley, enough cannot be said about the hospitality shown to the reenactors at this event. The numbers of unit displays has been growing since the inaugural in 2006. This year should continue that trend. Put this one on your calendar. The website is below:

http://www.rowlesburg.info/world_war_2_weekend.php

On the weekend of July 9-10 , Arthurdale Heritage Inc. will be sponsoring its annual New Deal Festival commemorating the founding of the community in the 1930′s. This will provide a unique opportunity for living historians to develop a peace-time impression if they do not already have one. You can contact Arthurdale Heritage at:

http://www.arthurdaleheritage.org

On September 25-26, 2010, Parsons, WV will host the first American Soldier at War Historic Timeline. This will be held on the Corrick’s Ford Battlefield. (Historical note-the first general officer killed in the Civil War fell here.) The organizers are looking for authentic living historians to portray units ranging from the French and Indian War up through Vietnam. This will be one of the first timeline events held in the state and will hopefully become an annual event. See the website for registration details:

<img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2483" title="Rick.
Our correspondent, Nick Korolev, recently attended an interesting workshop in Winchester, Virginia, and files this report:

For those who wish to know more about it, living history impressionists belong to the branch of historical reenactment that goes beyond the recreation of famous battles or setting up a historically accurate camp. These living historians brings to life the famous personalities who made history and allow the public to talk to historical personalities as if they had just traveled back in time to meet them. One has to not only study the times and battles, but read biographies and other first hand accounts in order to create as accurate as possible first person impression of the chosen personality. A little acting ability is always handy. Many experienced reenactors often branch of in this direction for a different challenge and it is ideal for historians and history buffs who can not take the rigors of combat reenacting.

With the coming 150th anniversary of the Civil War about to begin next year, my friend Richard Byrd and I, spent Fri evening and all of Sat with members of the Federal Generals Corps for the Eagles Living History Workshop honing our skills. The workshop was for members of both the Federal Generals Corps and Lee’s Lieutenants, two of the top Civil War living history groups that make events through the four state region. Both units have generals who commanded on both sides, the presidents, doctors who present surgical demonstrations of battlefield medicine and other famous personalities like, Belle Boyd, the Confederate spy; Clara Barton, founder of the Red Cross and Matthew Brady, photographer. Besides Civil War events many of the members also take part in school and civic programs centered around Civil War history education. I must state at this point at no time do our people take command at reenactments, though they sometimes appear mounted on the field to add a touch of realism at the invitation of the commanders of the reenactments.

Guest speakers at the workshop event included Russ Richards of Historical Entertainment, a production company that provides historical impressionists from all eras for movie companies filming both documentaries and feature films; Judi Flowers, a professional wardrobe director who presented a program on “Dressing the Part”; film and television director Caryn Nowland who talked on the actors role behind and in front of the camera; and actor Patrick Gorman, who portrayed Confederate General John B. Hood in the films GETTYSBURG and GODS AND GENERALS who provided acting coaching and a discussion on character development. We had a great time getting together with friends who braved the storm that really hit points north hard. All the presenters were wonderful to work with being down to earth people easy to talk to. Some filming of short scenarios was done and critiqued. With about fifty in attendance in uniform not to mention at least ten ladies in period dress, they ran out of time, so Rick and I did not do anything though we came up with a short scenario that would have worked. What we learned can be applied to other eras for those who do or wish to do first person impressions. I certainly will be applying it to another era once my house sells and I get settled in my new location.

There are plans in the works to hold another living history workshop February of 2011 , stretch it to a full weekend and open it to non-members for a small fee and many of our presenters plan on returning.

We received this notice from Lt. William King, USN concerning an interesting event upcoming in
May. It sounds like a fascinating endeavor and should be of particular interest
to those of the maritime pursuasion. Good luck and Godspeed to all involved:

On May 15-16 2010 a crew of 10 will attempt to row and sail a 26-foot monomoy surf boat
across the entrance to Chesapeake Bay. The transit, covering 14 miles of open water
skirting the Atlantic Ocean from Cape Henry to Cape Charles, will terminate at Kiptopeke
State Park on Virginia's Eastern Shore. The park is noted for its sunset vistas and a
line of 9 sunken WWII era ships that form its breakwater. The crew will land at the
park, camp overnight and then return to Virginia Beach the following day.

This test of traditional seamanship skills is being held in conjunction with local
environmental interests to raise awareness about pollution in the Chesapeake Bay
watershed. It does not commemorate any particular event, but celebrates the historical
use of small boats throughout the Chesapeake and the age-old seamanship and navigation
skills required for long transits over open water.

No modern navigation equipment will be carried, with the exception of hand-held VHF
radios and an emergency locator beacon. Rather, the boat's coxswain will navigate by
magnetic compass, leadline (a primitive depth finding tool, literally a weight on the end
of a small rope) and a chip log (another primitive device used to estimate speed).

Both the US Coast Guard and Virginia Pilot Association have been consulted and have
agreed to help prepare the crew and monitor its crossing. Both have said they await the
event with great anticipation and interest.

The boat being used in the crossing was carried aboard US Navy and US Coast Guard vessels
from 1963 to 1974. It has no mechanical propulsion system, relying on the power of eight
oarsmen or a single large sail to move it. Boats of nearly identical design have been
used on the east coast of the US for more than 250 years.

For more information, contact LT William King, USN at william.r.king2@navy.mil.

Thanks to our readers for all your comments and contributions over the past year. 2009 was an up and down year for history enthusiasts. The country’s economic woes hit the reenacting community and made it difficult for quite a few to take part in the hobby to the extent they would like. We won a victory at Old Bedford Village, but still have a dicy situation in Mercersburg, PA. Still there were quite a few quality events of all types and more are on the drawing boards. Here’s hoping that 2010 will be a better year than last for reenactors/living historians of all stripes and time periods.

We hope to keep trying to keep improve this little journalistic endeavor as well and would like to include more time periods than just our usual WWII and Civil War coverage. If you know of an interesting event and would like to invite us to it, or write about it yourself, drop us a line. There’s no pay, but you do get your 15 seconds of fame!

May you all have a safe and happy New Year!

Bill and Linda Donegan file this report on the “Troops and Trains” event at the Strasburg, PA Railroad attraction.

Linda and I made our yearly pilgrimage to Strasbourg, PA for the “Troops and Trains” living history event on November 6, 7 and 8, 2009.

Surprisingly, I took few photographs this year, because my impression was that of a US War Correspondent and my companion, Bill Garner, was my photographer (he took many photographs with his period camera, and those are not yet ready for publication). So I suppose that I will have to type a thousand words to make up for the lack of photographs.

To begin I must report on the pre-Strasbourg segment of our trip, the stop in Gettysburg, PA for shopping. Linda and I visited our two favorite shopping venues, “Wogans” and the “Antique Mall”. We had not been in Wogans five minutes, when Linda found a WW2 American Red Cross nurse helpers uniform. The ensemble was complete with white shirt and arm patch, a jeans jumper, and a hat. She also found a white nurses dress. The items had just been brought into the shop by the vendor and had not yet been tagged for sale. When I asked the price of the two outfits we knew that Linda had to buy them. Long story short..treatment with oxyclean and they are hanging in Linda’s closet. Look for her soon at an event near you. I purchased another original M-43 cap insignia set and another breast eagle at the “Antique Mall”.

We then continued our journey to Strasbourg, PA, checked into the hotel, and went to the museum for instructions. Later that Friday we met our friends, Dave and Lois Nowack, who took us to dinner.

Dinner was at the “Historic Revere Tavern” in Paradise, PA, located on Rt. 30 just east of Strasbourg. The Revere Tavern dates back to 1740.. It is a stone building formerly called the “Sign of the Spread Eagle”, when it was a stage stop. It was one of the better Inns along the 62 mile turnpike stretching from Philadelphia to Lancaster, Pa. They say the inn catered to the more prosperous class of travelers, providing him with accommodations suited to his means. Fine liquors and fine foods were served in generous portions to satisfy the hearty appetites generated by a long day in rocking, jolting stagecoaches.

In 1841 the tavern was the residence of Edward V. Buchanan, pastor of All Saints Episcopal Church in Paradise. His wife, Eliza Foster Buchanan, was the sister of Stephen Foster, who wrote “My Old Kentucky Home”, “Way Down Upon the Swanee River” and “O Susanna” to mention only three of the two hundred songs that he penned.

In 1854 the inn was purchased by Edwards brother, James Buchanan, the fifteenth President of the United States.

The menu is quite extensive and runs the gamut in price from $11.95 to $48.95 for entrees. I give this place five stars.

Early on Saturday November 7th we were seated in the museum conference room waiting for the safety orientation speech. That’s where we obtain our presenters badges, train tickets and schedule of events. See attached photo of the presenters. See if you recognize anyone you know.

Linda and I were roving presenters. Most of the presenters set up displays through out the train museum and man their stations. We prefer to walk around, visit all of our friends, help them man their displays, ride the trains and interact with the crowds. There were 1,050 visitors on Saturday.

This year we rode the train in a different manner. All three women Linda Donegan, Jan Garner, and Lois Nowack, rode together, with the men manning two displays. Then all three men, Bill Donegan, Bill Garner, and Dave Nowack rode together, while the women remained in the museum. See the only pictures of me taken on the train.

While waiting to board the train, Mary Yager approached me and asked if we could address her cub scout group. With the scouts gathered around us in a semicircle, I explained who I was as a war correspondent. I described my duties and that of the photographer. I borrowed some from Andy Rooney, Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow, as well as from the George Clooney character in “The Good German” and explained that I was now traveling to Nuremberg Germany to cover the war crimes trial.

I noticed that Capt. Craig Hall was standing behind me on the platform, so I alluded to his being a combat veteran, and then introduced him to the scouts. Captain Hall presented the Vietnam Era to the scouts, As a veteran of the Viet Nam War Craig did an excellent job. My friend Dave Nowack arrived during Hall’s presentation so I used that opportunity to ask him if he would present next.

Dave concluded the presentations with stories about the famous Eight Army Air Corps in WW2. Then we all boarded the train, sans the scouts, for the trip to Paradise and back. The train ride was enjoyable, with our car packed with world war two period attired military, (see attached photos), and we had to roam the train in order to interact with the public. There was a Civil Defense man, Chris, accompanied by two armed men with rifles (one a US Army MP and the other a Navy SP) looking for a suspected saboteur. I spoke to a French family, with several boys, who seemed a bit confused and alarmed that a terrorist might try to actually blow up the train.Following the train rides we were all reunited with our wives for lunch at various restaurants on the property.

The next big excitement for us was dinner at the “Iron Horse Restaurant” located across the street from our hotel “The Carriage House Inn”. We were all decked out in our best uniforms, civilian suits and poshest frocks at the big table in the main dining room.

In the dining room adjacent to ours, was a table full of Russian Air Force personnel in full dress uniforms! I became acquainted with two of the Russians, Roman and Tim, on a trip to the men’s room. We met them later at the USO dance where we exchanged e-mail addresses.

At the rear of the restaurant, seated a a large table, sat the entire crew of the B-25 which does the flights at Reading Pa and who were also scheduled to fly over the Cumberland MD event on November 14Th. Needless to say we had a pleasant time at this, another five star restaurant (say hello to Denise for us when you visit, and tell her that the Donegan’s told you about the establishment).

Arriving at the dance, which is also held in the museum between the train platforms, we were all too stuffed to dance at first, but after watching a few dances, we were all on the floor jitter-bugging, and fox trotting like “dancing with the stars.” Speaking of which, I give this event five Stars!!!!!
