FIG 2015

Occuring as usual during the last week of January,  this year’s FIG event was a particularly cold one. Once again, Linda and I joined the folks at the German hospital to assist with the living history.  I am not sure what the standing temperatures were for the weekend, but the wind chill was impressive.  To make maters worse, the side streets were generally sheets of ice, making walking treacherous.  All in all, this made the event a bit too period correct. I believe that at least one battle was cancelled due to the weather conditions. Since,  as usual, we made a point of staying indoors, we were able to miss out on the worst of it.

To make matters worse, this year, the vendors were strung out more than ever, which required a lot more slipping and sliding around just to get to all of them. Apparently there were some last minute changes as the map we had downloaded was not accurate. As a result, I am pretty sure that we missed some of the vendors. Too bad, since that is certainly one of the attractions for a lot of the participants.

Saturday evening, after the public demonstrations, we changed clothes and impressions and attended the annual winter meeting of our Soviet unit, the 193rd Rifles, which was held at Funck’s Restaurant – a good place to meet and eat.

As usual, we had a good time at the event and got to see some old friends and do some shopping. I guess that is as much as one could ask for.
