Smith House – Fire Department accepting Demolition Bids

The latest and grimmest news out of Mercersburg concerning the Justice William Smith House, as reported by Roscoe Barnes on http://www.publicopiniononline.com/ci_16273782?source=email

“If retired historian Richard MacMaster comes in with the lowest bid, then the house, one of the oldest in Mercersburg, could go to the Ulster-American Folk Park in Ireland — a place designated for Scotch-Irish history.

“The fact that a demolition contract is now open for bids means that the Smith house will certainly be demolished in the coming months,” MacMaster said in an e-mail. “The Ulster-American Folk Park has always been prepared to rescue this historic building when there was no other alternative to demolition. I think I can safely say that the museum is still actively interested.””

Well, it looks like the decision-makers at the Fire Department may have decided that they will show everybody who is boss and do what they want, even if it involves destroying or at least losing an irreplaceable piece of American history. Hopefully, if it has to go, the museum in Ireland will get the bid and at least save it from total destruction.
